With 130km of competitive roller coaster roads for Day 2 of Rally Finland, the Volkswagen of Jari-Matti Latvala started the day with only a small advantage over team mate Sebastian Ogier. Kris Meeke still held third position over Citroen’s Mads Ostberg but only just.

With the morning loop of stages out of the way, it was clearly evident that Latvala and Ogier were the only two fighting for the top podium spot while the gap to Meeke in third widened to over 30 seconds.

However with the afternoon session in full swing drama would strike with both Robert Kubica and Meeke crashing out of Rally Finland. Meeke on the third stage collected a tree and damaging his front suspension which Kubica tumbled end over end in a spectacular rollover that shocked the huge crowd of Finnish fans.

With the fight continuing up front, Latvala took control of the afternoon stages to increase his lead over Ogier to 13.2sec. Citroen’s Mads Ostberg was pushed up into third place after Meeke’s untimely mistake and that’s how the top three would finish the day.

With only one stage loop to run for the final day, the home advantage pressure is squarely on Latvala to win his first rally of 2015 and to take back to back Rally Finland victories. A huge Finnish crowd is expected tomorrow to cheer him on.

Jari-Matti Latvala

“As expected, today was a close battle and increased my lead to over 13 seconds that was far from easy. There are two challenging stages tomorrow and I’ll have to keep my concentration and literally bring the victory home.”

Sebastien Ogier

“It has been another good day; unfortunately I damaged the rear-left rim a few kilometres into stage 16 as a result. If I end up finishing second, that is still a fantastic result for the overall standings in the World Championship. Jari-Matti has really done a fantastic job, it will be almost impossible to catch him unless he makes a mistake.”

Kris Meeke

“After a few kilometres, there was a right-hand bend which tightened over a jump. I stayed in the middle, like I did on the first run, but when I turned into the corner I was already in the mud. The car hit a tree on the outside of the corner, breaking the front left-hand suspension. It’s a real shame, because we were on course for a good result.”
