The fifth round of the championship moved from its home in Algarve south of Lisbon to the North and the coastal city of Porto, Portugal’s second largest city outside Lisbon. Algarve had been it base for seven years; prior to this the event had a six year hiatus.

Portugal has a rich history with Rallying, Rui Madeira won the Group N WRC title many years ago while Armindo Araujo competed in the WRC at the front end of the field.

Even though the northern part of Portugal had been without a WRC event for almost 15 years, event organisers have been running the famous ‘Fafe Rallysprint’ for a number of years. It is a one stage sprint event run the week before the WRC event.

Fafe is famous for its lunar landscape and the famous Jump Salto da pedra sentada, the Fafe event alone attracts upwards of 100,000 people from all over the world and this year the stage will be run as the Power Stage to conclude the event.

The event officially started in Guimaraes East of Porto on Thursday afternoon before heading to Lousada for a single run of a stadium style stage where 25,000 people cram into the grandstands to watch their favourite WRC stars battle it out, two-by-two.

The event has nine competitive stages with almost 400km of gravel roads for teams to contend with. A huge field with over 100 cars ranging from the top WRC cars to 1.3 litre Opel Corsas competing at the end of the field.

As this is a new event, new pace notes add a challenge for all teams with plenty of high speed sections to ensure this will be an exciting rally.
