Coming in to the German round, Sebastian Ogier still holds a sizeable lead in the championship, almost 90 points over team mate Latvala with Mikkelsen in third.

If results go his way this weekend, Ogier could possibly win the championship at the home rally of his Volkswagen team.

Teams head north of Trier for two lots of four stages which will play out through the quick vineyard section of roads which includ stages along the famous Mosel River.

The morning stages saw a number of small incidents which included Ott Tanak missing a call from his navigator which resulted in Tanak running into an embankment.

After the morning loop of stages, Ogier had the overall lead closely followed by VW team mate Latvala a mere 0.4sec behind with Mikkelsen a further 3.7sec further back.

The lead between the two went back and forth over the next four stages.

With stages repeated in the afternoon teams made slight changes to their setups in order to improve times.

The changes were evident with all the drivers improving on times from the morning’s session.  Sebastien Ogier resumed his position in the lead with Latvala closing the gap to 0.1sec with Sordo moving into third position only a further 5.2sec further back.

Heat 2 of Rally Germany sees the teams travel east of Trier for a further 8 stages including the famous Panzerplatte stages.
