Rally de España 2015  | Preview

The penultimate round of the 2015 WRC championship moves to the coastal Spanish town of Salou in the South of Spain just 100km south of Barcelona for RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada.

Round 12 highlights the only mixed surface round of the season with teams having to convert their cars from gravel to asphalt specification after the first leg of the event.

Drivers must quickly adapt their driving style to the change in road service, from tarmac comparable to a race track service to gravel. Should temperatures be hot, drivers will need to adjust and manage tyre wear carefully.

The event begins on Thursday night with a street stage in the Montjuïc district of Barcelona, on roads that have hosted the Spanish Grand Prix F1 race in the past. Friday’s opening leg is predominantly gravel then with Saturday and Sunday’s legs switching entirely to asphalt.

In 2014 Sebastien Ogier lifted the trophy with team mate Latvala in second with retired Mikko Hirvonen crossing the line in third.

With the Championship decided, the battle is still on for the minor placings, Latvala holds a 34 point lead over team mate Mikkelsen with Mads Ostberg a further 28 points behind.

Anything is possible this week especially on tarmac as seen in France a few weeks ago.

Next Round

The next round of the championship moves to the European mainland and RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada just outside of Barcelona, Spain 22nd to 25th October, 2015.
