Virgin Australia Supercars Round 7 – Castrol Townsville 400 – Saturday

The Virgin Australia Supercars again ventured north to escape the southern states winter by heading to Townsville in far north Queensland for the seventh round of the Championship.

Townsville didn’t disappoint turning on stunning weather for the Saturday’s opening race of the weekend.

Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup made the most of the 20 minute qualifying session, setting a new qualifying lap record. The time of 1:12.1443 marked the debut of Dunlop Soft Tyre in Townsville.

Whincup’s Red Bull teammate Shane Van Gisbergen qualified second fastest to put him alongside on the front row. Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney and SuperCheap Auto Racing’s Chaz Mostert were fastest enough to make up the second row of the grid.

Race 14

Red Bull Racing Australia dominated Race 14 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Jamie Whincup leading the race from start to finish.

The race wasn’t as straight forward for Whincup’s teammate, Shane Van Gisbergen, who had to fight his way past Chaz Mostert before settling back into second place.

The race was almost trouble free, with the Safety Car only making one appearance. With just five laps left to run Nick Percat found the wall after his steering failed at turn 6. Percat’s stranded car was quickly recovered leaving a sprint to the end.

Bottle-O Racing’s Mark Winterbottom, seized the opportunity to get past his teammate Mostert to take out the final spot on the podium.

After the race Whincup said “I am wrapped with the result. There was plenty going on behind the scenes which was really pretty frustrating actually. It was one of the most frustrating races I have been involved in one way or another. Like always, you have got to have quick cars to win races and we had two rockets today so a big well done to the engineers.

The Virgin Australia Supercars are back on track tomorrow with another 20 minute qualifying session and top ten shootout before the final race of the weekend.
