VIDEO | Purist Porsche Boxster Spyder launched in New York

MyDrive | Porsche AG – New York – A new open top star – the Porsche Boxster Spyder – will make its world debut at the New York International Auto Show this week.

The new Spyder keeps the independent character of its successful predecessor which has already attained cult status. True to its purist origins, the classic fabric roof is still opened and closed by hand and the Spyder is this time only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

As a true roadster, the Boxster Spyder offers a traditional sports-car driving experience but with leading performance. This means a firm sports suspension with a 20 mm lower ride height, brakes from the 911 Carrera, more direct steering, and a 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with 276 kW.

Occupants can look forward to a genuine sports-car experience with outstanding driving dynamics in the lightest yet most powerful Boxster available. Sprint time from zero to 100 km/h is around 4.5 seconds en-route to a top speed of 290 km/h. NEDC overall fuel consumption is a very respectable 9.9 L/100 km.

The distinctive design of the Boxster Spyder includes stylistic elements that recall the legendary sports and race cars from bygone Porsche. For example, as a tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s, the new Boxster Spyder has two prominent streamlined bulges that extend down along the long rear lid behind the headrests.

The manually operated lightweight top is suitable for everyday use and brings to mind roadsters from the past, while the fabric fins that stretch back to the rear lend the roadster’s silhouette its characteristic design. The front and rear sections of the Spyder take their design cues from the Cayman GT4.

More so than in any other Boxster, the interior of the new top model creates an atmosphere of driving fun. The driver and passenger sit in light sports bucket seats with large side supports, while the new steering wheel with a diameter of 360 mm helps ensure the mid-engine roadster can be driven precisely and with great agility.

While versions of the new 981 Spyder to be sold in other markets adopt a minimal specification, models bound for Australia will have a higher specification level to meet market requirements. Additional features included as standard are: Porsche Communication Management (PCM) incorporating satnav and communication features, superior sound package, cruise control, heated seats and dual-zone air conditioning.

The new Boxster Spyder will arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2015, priced from $169,000 excluding statutory and dealer charges.

Porsche Boxster Spyder: fuel consumption urban 14.2 l/100 km; extra-urban 7.5 l/100 km; combined 9.9 l/100 km.
