The V8 Supercar Championship makes it second consecutive trip north to escape the winter for the sixth round of the season.

This weekend the V8 Supercars will take to the streets of Townsville for the Castrol Edge Townsville 400 for two 200KM races.

Mark Winterbottom (Pepsi Max Crew/Prodrive Racing Australia) leads the championship extending his lead over rival Craig Lowndes (Red Bull Racing Australia) by 95 points. Fabian Coulthard (Freightliner Racing/Brad Jones Racing) is close behind Lowndes by just 60 points.

The 2014 Champion Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Racing Australia) continues to struggle back in eight place with Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team) and Rick Kelly (Nissan Motorsport) hot on his heels in ninth and tenth respectively.

Whincup will need a good result this weekend to have any chance at claiming his seventh V8 Supercars title.

V8 Supercars News

After a hot and bruising encounter in Darwin, teams have been hard at work preparing for Townsville this weekend.

A number of teams have chosen this round to show off new liveries with the Holden Racing Team unveiling a special 1997 retro Peter Brock tribute, Brock’s last season in V8 Supercars.

Paying homage to the famous Brock 05 number, Garth Tander has changed his number to 02 for the weekend.

Nissan Motorsport has also unveiled a new livery for the Townsville round with Michael Caruso’s Nissan Altima running a Nissan GT Academy livery.

Todd Kelly’s Nissan Altima will also receive a new look for the category’s endurance races and for the length of the 2016 series with Carsales.com.au signing on as a primary backer.

V8 Supercars action kicks off on Friday in Townsville’s Reid Park, with practice, before qualifying and racing on Saturday and Sunday.
