V8 Supercars | WD40 Phillip Island – Friday

It was a stormy Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Victoria for the opening day of action for the penultimate round of the V8 Supercars for 2015. While the thunder would stop, the rain would be a factor all day with heavy showers occurring regularly.

There will be a couple of familiar faces in unfamiliar cars this weekend as the V8 Supercars 2016 silly season reached fever pitch. Long-time Prodrive Racing Australia co-driver Dean Canto was sent over to Erebus Motorsport to replace Ash Walsh for the weekend while Dunlop Series driver Chris Pither jumped in to replace Andre Hiemgartner at SuperBlack Racing for the event. Pitcher’s performance will likely determine a number of seats in the 2016 driver line up.

Karl Reindler was also on standby to cover for the injured Nick Percat at Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, but Percat was given the all clear to resume his drive after an infection his injured foot deemed to be ok.

Practice 1

The first 60 minute practice saw three different manufacturers set the fastest times in the session. Scott Pye (DJR Team Penske) would end the session fastest for Ford with a 1:32.0552. Todd Kelly (Nissan Motorsport) ended with a 1:32.1472 for Nissan, while Jason Bright (Team BOC) locked in a 1:32.2901 for Holden.

The session was relatively uneventful, even with the tricky conditions however there were a couple of minor off track excursions. The most notable were for Todd Kelly (Nissan Motorsport) and Fabian Coulthard (Freightliner Racing) but they were able to resume without issue.

Practice 2

The second 60 minute session was also hampered by rain with cars spending a lot of time in the garages not to use up their wet tyres. By the end of the session Mark Winterbottom (Pepsi Max Crew) had locked in 1:35.9504 which would be the fastest time of the session. Scott Pye (DJR Team Penske) and Jason Bright (Team BOC) backed up his earlier performances with a 1:36.0863 and 1:36.24.71 respectively, second and third fastest.

V8 Supercars action continues tomorrow with qualifying before two 60 kilometre sprint races.
