SuperSprint Sunday – Queensland Raceway

Sunday’s final day of V8 Supercars action at Ipswich’s Queensland Raceway took place under clear blue skies as fans took the chance to get up close with their favourite cars and drivers during the ‘True Colour Track Walk’ experience.

Qualifying Race 20

On track action kicked off with a 20 minute qualifying session that determined the grid for the 65 lap Race 20 of the championship.

Red Bull Racing Australia bounced back at their home track

Chaz Mostert (Pepsi Max Crew/Prodrive Racing Australia) would continue his run of strong qualifying to claim another pole position. Mostert’s teammate, Mark Winterbottom was second fastest at the end of the session.

Red Bull Racing Australia bounced back at their home track with both Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup starting off the second row.

Race 20

The 200 kilometre race featured both soft and hard Dunlop tyres. However the favourable strategy, as per previous rounds was to start on the soft tyre, pit early to switch to the hard and then back to the soft for the end of the race.

Mostert finally made the most of his good qualifying making a great start with Winterbottom in second and Lowndes in third.

Todd Kelly strikes trouble in his Nissan Altima with just four laps to go.

Fabian Coulthard (Freightliner Racing) would be the first to dive into pits on Lap 8 and switch to the hard tyre. Lowndes pitted a few laps later which moved him past Winterbottom and into second place.

On Lap 33 the leaders would make their second stop switching back to the soft tyre. Mostert would emerge the leader closely followed by Lowndes and Winterbottom.

Todd Kelly would strike trouble in his Nissan Altima with an untimely engine failure just four laps to go.

In the end it was Mostert taking the win for Ford with Holden’s Craig Lowndes in second and Mark Winterbottom in third.

Race 20 Post Race Driver Interviews

In the post-race press conference, Mostert attributed his changed fortune to, “The boys changed the clutch overnight and it felt pretty good off the start line, I finally got away without hesitating.”

Will Davison (Erebus Motorsport) was the best of the other manufacturers finishing seventh for Mercedes. James Moffat (Nissan Motorsport) salvaged a top 10 for Nissan. While Scott McLaughlin (Wilson Security Racing GRM) finished in thirteenth for Volvo.

Championship

Another strong weekend for Mark Winterbottom has him continuing to extend his lead in the championship over Craig Lowndes and Chaz Mostert. By contrast a rather disappointing weekend for Fabian Coulthard has seen him tumble down the championship standings to sixth.
