Practice Session One

A stunning autumn day greeted both fans and competitors for the first of two 60 minute practice sessions for the V8 Supercars. With Winton being the home test track for all of the Victorian based teams, several teams elected to run their Pirtek Endurance Cup co-drivers early in the session to clock up some much needed track time.

The additional set of tyres for use during the two practice sessions today, allowed teams to get a good gauge on setup changes needed for this weekend. The first session also allowed the primary drivers to attempt a couple of qualifying simulations towards the end of the session. Given that tomorrow’s qualifying sessions are at the same time and with no rain forecast, drivers now have a good indication as to what to expect tomorrow.

In the final seconds of the first practice session, Tim Slade (Supercheap Auto Racing) set an exceptionally quick time in his Holden Commodore to eclipse the time of Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Racing Australia). Erebus Motorsport continued to impress on the time sheets with Ash Walsh setting the third fastest time in his Mercedes-Benz AMG.

Practice Session Two

The fine weather continued as the V8 Supercars took to the track for the second and final practice session of the day. With teams having a set of tyres to burn through, there was plenty of action on the track with some teams completing almost 60 laps between the two sessions.

To follow on from the first session, teams once again used the early part of practice to get their endurance co-drivers behind the wheel.

A number of drivers including;

    • Cameron Waters (Pepsi Max Crew),
    • Taz Douglas (Nissan Motorsport),
    • Andrew Jones (Team BOC),
    • Steve Owen (Pepsi Max Crew),
    • Jack Perkins (Holden Racing Team),
    • Warren Luff (Holden Racing Team),
    • Macaulay Jones (GB Galvanising Raving),
    • Dean Canto (Bottle-O Racing),
    • Luke Youlden (Freightliner Racing),
    • Jack Le Brocq (Erebus Motorsport),
    • Ant Pedersen (Super Black Racing) and
    • Tony D’Alberto (Supercheap Auto Racing)

all had track time during the second practice session before switching back to their primary drivers to dial the cars in for the first race of the weekend, tomorrow morning.

At the end of the 60 minute session, it was Pepsi Max Crew’s Chaz Mostert who again was the fastest on track in his Ford Falcon followed closely behind by James Moffat (Nissan Motorsport).

After the session Moffat admitted “I used an old set of soft tyres to bank that time today but we [Pepsi Max Crew Team] still have a lot of work to do before we start qualifying tomorrow”.

James Courtney was the fastest of the Holden drivers, set the third fastest time in his Holden Racing Team Commodore.

Tomorrow will be a true indicator of who has the fastest car when everyone is on hard tyres during tomorrow two qualifying sessions.

V8 Supercars action continues tomorrow at Winton Raceway, with both qualifying and two 60 kilometre sprint races on the program.
