V8 Supercars – Castrol Edge Townsville 400 Friday

Taking over the streets of Reid Park in Townsville, V8 Supercars headed to Far North Queensland for sixth round of the 2015 Championship. While Friday only presented a practice day for the drivers and teams, fans were out in force to catch some early V8 action.

Practice 1

It was an early start for the V8 Supercar crews, with the first 30 minute practice session kicking off at 8:15am. The temporary nature of the track would mean the morning session was used for drivers to re-familarise themselves with the road circuit.

It was a trouble free run in the first session with Pepsi Max Crew’s Mark Winterbottom (Prodrive Racing Australia) proving the fastest. In a surprise run, Cooldrive’s Tim Blanchard (Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport) who opted to use a set of soft tyres in the session, banked an impressive time towards the end of the session closely followed by James Courtney in the retro styled Holden Racing Team Commodore.

Practice 2

The second 30 minute practice session saw lap times tumble as the circuit started to rubber up. Team Darrell Lea’s Shane Van Gisbergen (Tekno Autosport’s) struck early vibration issues with the team swapping the drivetrain during the session to try and resolve the problem for the third practice session.

Meanwhile out on track, Solar Australia’s Will Davison (Erebus Motorsport) set the fastest time of the session with a 1:13.02 with the Super Black Racing Ford Falcon of Andre Heimgartner crossing the line second fastest and James Courtney continuing to show his pace, third fastest.

Practice 3

The third and final practice for the day was another 30 minute session. Track conditions continued to improve allowing teams to dial their cars.

Nissan’s progress was halted late in the session with the Nissan Altima of Rick Kelly (Jack Daniels Racing) suffering an engine issue. Kelly this weekend is using new upgrades to the Nissan power plant although the team hadn’t confirmed if the new upgrades contributed to the on track issue.

At the end of the final session today, Chaz Mostert (Prodrive Racing Australia) proved the fastest with Nick Percat (Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport) in the Repair Management Australia Commodore crossing the line second fastest. The Mercedes-Benz of Will Davison (Erebus Motorsport) proved the surprise of the session by crossing the line third fastest.

With a mixture of recycled soft and new hard tyres in used during the course of today’s sessions, the true performance of the cars won’t be known until qualifying tomorrow.

V8 Supercars action continues tomorrow in Townsville, with qualifying before the 200 kilometre Race 16 of the Championship.
