V8 Supercars Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 | Thursday Practice

The V8 Supercars Championship changes tempo this week with the annual pilgrimage to Mt Panorama in Bathurst for the biggest endurance race on the V8 Supercar calendar. While championship points are up for grabs this weekend, they won’t be the topic of discussion with the Peter Brock Trophy given to the team that manages to conquer the mountain this year.

V8 Supercars News

Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney will sit out this weekend as he continues to struggle with his recovery after marketing sign hit him in the ribs in a freak accident at Sydney Motorsport Park in August.

Taking Courtney’s place this weekend will be V8 Supercars veteran Russell Ingall who has teamed up with Jack Perkins.

Fans will have to keep a keen eye out for their favourite teams this weekend with many cars sporting special new liveries for this Bathurst round. Holden Racing Team have partnered up with Star Wars to promote the upcoming Star Wars movie – The Force Awakens.

Nissan Motorsport will be running Jim Richard’s Championship winning tribute livery on Michael Caruso’s No. 23 Altima.

Erebus Motorsport have received new sponsors on each of their cars with Will and Alex Davison being supported by Penrite Oils for this weekend while Ash Walsh and Jack Le Broq will be backed Wendy’s for the rest of the season.

V8 Supercars for the first time have decided to include two wildcard entries for this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Aaren and Drew Russell have joined forces as privateers in the Plus Fitness backed Holden Commodore with Renee Gracie and Simone De Silvestro have teamed up in the Harvey Norman ‘Supergirls’ Ford Falcon.

Practice 1

The first session of the weekend was a chance for the main championship drivers to have a crack at the Mt Panorama circuit. While the 45 minute session was relatively uneventful, the Red Flag was called upon to stop the session after Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander harmlessly parked his car in the gravel at Turn 1.

Pepsi Max Crew’s Chaz Mostert ended the session with the fastest time, setting a stunning pace early in the weekend with a 2:06.3223 lap time.

Practice 2

The second practice session of the day was dedicated to the co-drivers to get so much needed seat time on the challenging Mt Panorama layout. However not everything went to plan for some teams, with David Russell crashing the No. 15 Jack Daniel’s Nissan Altima at ‘The Cutting’. The Nissan Motorsport crew worked on the car all afternoon, missing the third practice session to ensure the car will be ready for the rest of the weekend.

Warren Luff finished the session fastest in the No. 2 Holden Racing Team Commodore that he shares with Garth Tander.

Practice 3

The third session of the day saw the practice lap record tumble with Freightliner Racing’s Fabian Coulthard smashing his own previously set record with a time of 2:05.4786.

Prodrive Racing Australia continued to show their presence at the top of the timesheets with three drivers also bettering the previous lap record.

V8 Supercars action continues on Friday with a couple more practice sessions before qualifying.
