Sydney Motorsport Park Preview

The V8 Supercar Championship makes its only repeat visit for 2015 by heading back to Sydney Motorsport Park in Western Sydney after February’s preseason test day.

With teams gaining a good bank of data from earlier in the year, this round which marks the half way point in the championship will be used to build momentum before the Pirtek Endurance Cup.

Consistent solid results for Ford’s Mark Winterbottom (Pepsi Max Crew) have seen him extend his championship lead over Holden rival Craig Lowndes (Red Bull Racing Australia) to 256 points.

Winterbottom also has the support of Prodrive Racing Australia team mates Chaz Mostert (Pepsi Max Crew) and David Reynolds (Bottle-O Racing) who sit third and fourth in the championship, right behind Lowndes on points.

V8 Supercars News

Since the last official round of the V8 Supercars Championship in Ipswich three weeks ago, five V8 Supercars teams (one from each manufacturer) took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur in a series of demonstration races during the inaugural KL City Grand Prix. The move was to gauge interest for a possible round of the 2016 championship to be held in the Malaysian capital.

The first two races of the event were won by Ford’s Chaz Mostert (Pepsi Max Crew), while Nissan’s Todd Kelly (in his brothers Jack Daniel’s Racing Altima) took out the third and final race of the event.

Although the V8 Supercars were well received by the 200,000 spectators over the course of the event, it’s been noted that there are several concerns that would need to be addressed before the championship could commit to sending the full grid of cars there next year. We’ll know the fate of the KL venture when the 2016 V8 Supercars Championship calendar is released around the Bathurst 1000 weekend.

In Pirtek Enduro Cup news, there have been a series of big announcements since the last round in Queensland. The entire field of co-drivers have now locked in with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport confirming that Karl Reindler will line up alongside Tim Blanchard and Brad Jones Racing confirming that Macauley Jones will line up alongside Dale Wood for the three races (Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast).

There will also be two wildcard entries on the grid for the Bathurst 1000 at the iconic Mt Panorama. The first of which will feature experienced Dunlop Series team Novacastrian Motorsport fielding one of Garry Rodgers Motorsports older Holden Commodore chassis for brothers Aaren and Drew Russell.

Aaren who narrowly missed out on a co-driver’s seat at Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, hastily put together a deal to run a Plus Fitness backed car for the big race. Plus Fitness has supported Aaren Russell’s Dunlop Series campaign throughout 2015 and will see both Aaren and Drew team up for both the 250 kilometre Dunlop Series race and the 1000 kilometre main race over the weekend.

The second wildcard will feature a fifth Ford Falcon from Prodrive Racing Australia for the all-female duo of Renee Gracie and Simona De Silvestro. Gracie is in her rookie year in the Dunlop Series (a second tier V8 Supercars championship), and will make her Dunlop Series and V8 Supercars debut on the same weekend.

However Gracie has Mount Panorama experience behind the wheel of a Porsche Carrera Cup car in recent years. It will also be the first taste of V8 Supercar racing for the Swiss, De Silvestro to make her Mt Panorama debut. De Silvestro will bring a wealth of international experience to the table competing in the American Indy Car Championship and signing on to compete for Andretti Sport’s Formula E team in 2015-2016.
