MyDrive | McLaren Automotive - This year heralds an exciting time in the history of McLaren Automotive with the launch of the brand new 720S, the second generation of the British manufacturers hugely popular super sports series.

In a heavily contested supercar market, McLaren continues to produce flawless and faultless designs and have continued to prove their resilience to ‘pressures to conform’.

McLaren’s Track 22 innovation and expansion plans for the next six years will see the British brand become the world’s fastest growing supercar and sports car manufacturer with an incredible investment of £1bn to produce up to 15 new models and recruit a further 500 staff.

Launched in Melbourne, the 720S replaces the 650S which takes on a whole new character for the brand in design, function and power.

True to McLaren’s pioneering spirit, the McLaren 720S is a revolutionary leap forward, a high-performance supercar that is both thrilling to drive and striking to look at.

The 720S looks brutally fast, agile yet incredibly sharp and focused. The integral design of the body is to rechannel, reuse and redistribute airflow. Looks at this price-point will only get you so far. The ‘looks’ of the 720S are incredibly functional, flawless in fact, yet are harmonious to the overall design.

From the outside the 720S takes on a whole new dimension with a total rethink on how aerodynamic airflow is understood. The design of exterior panels seemingly take on a life all of their own to create active efficiency and cooling.

Robert Melville, McLaren Design Director has made a number of bold and ingenious changes to the design language of the 720S that are functional as they are inspiring.

“The 720S is a new chapter in the development of McLaren’s design language; it has perfect proportions that bring our key pillar of ‘Everything for a Reason’ together in one pure aerodynamically shrink-wrapped and sophisticated whole. McLaren is always brave in its approach and this car is a perfect expression of that innovative culture.” said Robert Melville, Design Director for McLaren.

The new design language has seen a deletion of the large air intakes that have flanked the sides of the 12C, the 650S, the 675LT and the 680HS. To assist, the A-Pillar has been designed to effectively manage fast moving airflow into the ducts within the doors to maximise cooling.

To add strength and aerodynamic ability, the skeletal door frames are shrink-wrapped in carbon to produce a futuristic and highly functional feature.

From the front, the eye-sockets give the 720S character and a sense of depth, a dramatic design cue that assists in utilising air to the front radiators before exiting to maximise downforce and reduce drag.

These elaborate designs provide McLaren with a unique and creative point of difference in producing creative yet functional supercars.

This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new 720S is absolutely true to McLaren’s pioneering spirit in behind a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment” said the McLaren, Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt.

The design language of the 720S provides a real glimpse into the future of the Sport Series and Ultimate series. McLaren wants to continue the growth of these platforms to maintain brand identity and dominance in key markets throughout the world.
