In the final two qualifying sessions on Thursday evening at Le Mans, Porsche locked out the first three positions for the 83rd running of 24 Heures du Mans.

With qualifying continually interrupted by yellow and red flags, the lap record and pole winning time set on Wednesday evening by the number 18 Porsche 919 team of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Mark Lieb remained at the top of the timing sheets.

The lap was more than a statement of speed and superiority, it was Porsche’s first pole position in 27 years, not since 1988 when Hans-Joachim Stuck claimed pole in the Shell 962.

Nissan were out to break a few records of their own although fell short of their goal to be in front of the LMP2 cars.  Officials after qualifying revealed that the GTR-LM times were outside of the required 110% qualifying time rule.

Nissan needed a time of 3:36.575 or better but were a mere four tenths outside, relegating the team to the back of the LMP1 / LMP2 starting grid.
