MyDrive | Automobili Lamborghini – After a long anticipated wait it was Australia’s turn to witness the launch of the latest version of the Huracán, the V10 rear-wheel drive only LP 580-2.

Originally unveiled in Los Angeles in November last year, the launch of this car brings the tally of Huracán models to three which consists of the Coupe, the Spyder and now the rear-wheel drive only, LP 580-2.

The success of the Huracán since it replaced the Gallardo has been phenomenal to the point it has even broken Lamborghini’s expectations with the company struggling to keep up with customer demand.

“The Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 continues the Lamborghini tradition of pure, visionary and technology-driven models,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

“The rear-wheel drive model fits perfectly into our Huracán family, appealing to those wanting an even more intense driving experience, or who currently drive other rear-wheel drive marques and aspire to driving a Lamborghini.

“This is the purest expression of a Lamborghini to date, with class-leading technological refinements. It is a serious car for serious drivers: it is maximum driving fun.” Stephan Winkelmann continued.

Power from the 5.2 litre V10 has been reduced from 610HP to 580HP hence the model name change with 75 percent of the 540NM of torque available from an impressive 1000RPM. 0-100/60 is 3.4 seconds although most drivers would struggle to notice the slower time different to the LP 610-4.

“Power has been reduced to provide the best day to day usable power” remarked Eginardo Bertoli, Automobili Lamborghini Country Manager for Japan, Korea and Oceania.

Weight has also been addressed with a reduction of 33KG/ 73lbs thanks to the rear-wheel only drivetrain and a generous dose of carbon composite and aluminium making up the chassis, engine, and exterior panels.

To compensate for the reduction in weight, Lamborghini have designed a new front spoiler to increase downforce and airflow into the front air dam and radiators.

Weight distribution has altered to a 40 – 60 percent rear bias split which assists in delivering the Huracán’s rich sporty nature especially when accelerating and cornering.

The selectable driving modes STRADA, SPORT and CORSE have been re-tuned to emphasise the authentic rear-wheel drive behaviour and accentuate it’s oversteer characteristics.

The rear tyres have been specifically designed for the LP 580-2 thanks to Lamborghini’s close association with tyre partner Pirelli. Rear tyres now measure 19 inch by 305/35 and should provide drivers with plenty of grip and road feel.

Steel brakes are standard and will work fine under normal driving conditions including the occasional track day. Standard suspension has been tweaked to be slightly firmer and stiff in the aim of pronouncing the sportier nature of the rear-wheel drive. Ceramic brakes and magnetic dampeners are available as additional options.

Unlike the previous rear-wheel drive version of the Gallardo, you will have to be a dab hand at spotting the obvious difference between this version and the all-wheel drive version of the Huracán.

The updated interior is slightly sportier with a few exterior modifications. Most of the changes however are under the body of Lamborghini’s newest arrival.

Final Thought

With no press vehicle available to test drive at the Australian launch, our drive review will have to wait until later in the year. No doubt by that time though, Lamborghini will have released another special model of this amazing supercar.
