Written by Adam Tonkin | The history of the world has been recorded for thousands of years so that generations can research the past and acknowledge the achievements of mankind.  Obviously throughout the ages some years do stand out more so than others and in the case of this story that year is 1922.

1922 was significant for many reasons, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) started their radio program on 2LO, the first successful insulin was developed for diabetes, building work started on Yankee Stadium, man for the first time in 3000 years set eyes on the Tomb of Tutankhamen, Australian’s had their first taste of Vegemite and José Froilán González was born.  Who is José Froilán González?

José Froilán González was a Formula 1 driver from 1950 to 1960 competing in a total of 26 races.  One day in particular that stands out in his F1 career was the 10th July 1951.  On this day José recorded Scuderia Ferrari’s first F1 victory by winning the British Grand Prix in his Enzo built Ferrari 375 F1 racer.

Fast forward to July 2011; Scuderia Ferrari and the FIA honoured Froilán at the British Grand Prix by giving Fernando Alonso the privilege of driving his 1951 British Grand Prix winning Ferrari 375 F1 car around the Silverstone Circuit.  60 years later and almost to the day, Fernando Alonso also went on to win the British Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari in his current F1 car in a historic copycat feat.

To commemorate Froilán and Fernando’s achievement for Scuderia Ferrari, the 599 GTB 60F1 Fernando Alonso Edition was built and last week I had the opportunity to have one on one time with the only Australian delivered version available here in Melbourne, Australia.

Walking into the main showroom, the 599 GTB 60F1 is front and centre; it literally greets you as you enter the Zagame Automotive Ferrari and Maserati showroom.  All Ferrari’s have the ability to create a presence regardless the company they keep although with a showroom full of brand new Ferrari’s and Maserati’s, this 599 stands out in a slightly different way.

The A-Pillar, front guards, front lip and roof that were once body coloured are now accented in white to match the livery on the current Scuderia Ferrari F1 car.  The tricolours of the Italian flag are even present on the lip of the rear spoiler and the Ferrari logo on both front guards is of similar size to the one that adorns Fernando’s current F1 car.  The exterior is finished off with an aggressive set of 20” diamond finished forged alloy 5 spoke rims wrapped with Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

Inside the 599 GTB 60F1, the driver and passenger Sabelt seats use Superfabric similar to material used on the seat in the F1 car with the rest of the interior features being wrapped in black Alcantara.   Besides the HGTE handling package, most of the additions to this Fernando Alonso Edition are cosmetic with no changes to the ample 612HP, 0 – 100 in 3.7 seconds V12 engine.  The retail price here in Australia of $725,000 + on road costs may seem steep although with only 40 variants available world-wide, this 599 will be a prized piece for any Ferrari connoisseur.
