Rally de France  | Rally Preview – Rallye de France 2015 now known as Tour de Corse is the 11th round of the World Rally Championship which returns to Corsica on the Mediterranean Sea after a 7 year hiatus.

The French round of the WRC was last held on the island of Corsica in 2008 and dated back to 1973. After a year’s absence due to rotation, the rally moved to the Alsace region of the French mainland in 2010.

Corsica earned the nickname ‘The Rally of 10,000 Corners’ for its never-ending sequences of turns. Tight and twisty mountain roads are often bordered on one side by a rock face and on the other by a sheer drop into the sea. Rough and abrasive asphalt places high demands on tyres.

For many crews this is the first time they have tackled the rally, so this really places great importance on well written pace notes.

Corsica also provides a new challenge for teams, whilst there are almost 350km of competitive stages; the event navigates almost the entire island in a clockwise manner. A total of nine stages make up the event with teams finishing each day in a different city on the island.

The west coast town of Ajaccio will host Thursday evening’s start and Sunday afternoon’s finish. Overnight stops will be held in the north of the island in Bastia on Friday, and Porto Vecchio in the south on Saturday with Corte, in the centre of the island, hosting the single service park.

The pressure for Sebastian Ogier and Volkswagen Motorsport is certainly off this round after the winning both the Drivers and Manufacturers titles respectively. However the battle for the top five positions is still a close battle between Latvala, Mikkelsen, Ostberg and Neuville.

A 1,2,3 finish for VW could still be on the cards but with this being the second of only three tarmac events this year, anything is possible.
